Pivotal Hour was founded in Bangkok with one clear purpose: to provide mechanical watch owners with a place where the work is done carefully, the findings are communicated honestly, and the watch is returned in better condition than it arrived.

— Our History —

How Pivotal Hour Came to Be

Pivotal Hour opened its doors on Sathorn Tai Road in 2014. The founder, a watchmaker who trained in Switzerland before returning to Thailand, wanted to build a workshop that served Bangkok's growing community of mechanical watch collectors — people who had inherited a piece from a relative, or who wore a chronograph daily and wanted someone to keep it in proper order.

The early years were modest. A single bench, a handful of hand tools, and a commitment to taking on only the work that could be done well. That approach shaped the workshop's character more than any formal policy could. Word reached clients not through advertising but through the quiet satisfaction of a watch returned with a written report and a pressure test record attached.

The workshop now employs three bench technicians, each with a distinct area of depth — water resistance systems, estate documentation, and chronograph complications. The ethos remains unchanged: accept only what can be done with care, document everything, and say plainly when a job falls outside what can be responsibly handled.

What We Stand For

Mechanical watches are durable objects — most will outlast the people who own them if they receive reasonable attention at sensible intervals. Pivotal Hour exists to provide that attention in a setting where the owner can understand what was done and why.

We do not aim to be the fastest workshop in Bangkok, nor the least expensive. We aim to be the most transparent one. Every client who leaves a watch with us knows what we intend to do before we open the case, receives a written account of what we found when we did, and can read the test results that confirm the work was completed to specification.

This matters most for estate watches, where the history of a piece is often unknown and an owner deserves an honest picture before committing to restoration costs. It matters equally for a diver's watch whose water resistance needs to be confirmed rather than assumed.

Trained in Biel-Bienne, Switzerland. Focuses on water resistance systems and case integrity. Has been at the bench in Bangkok since 2014.

Estate Assessment Specialist

Studied horological conservation in Japan. Specialises in documenting inherited and second-hand timepieces and preparing assessment reports for owners.

Chronograph Technician

Focuses on mechanical chronograph complications. Handles column wheel and cam-actuated movements with a particular interest in vintage Swiss chronographs.

How We Work at the Bench

These are not aspirations — they describe what happens on every bench appointment at Pivotal Hour.

Photographic Record on Arrival

Every watch is photographed when it comes in — case, dial, case-back, and strap — before any work begins. These images form the opening entry in the service record.

Instrument-Based Testing

Pressure tests are conducted on calibrated equipment. Timing rates are measured on a timing machine. Results are numerical, not impressionistic.

Written Service Summary

Each service concludes with a written summary: what was inspected, what was replaced, what was tested, and what the readings showed. The document belongs to the owner.

Pre-Work Consent

No work proceeds without the owner's agreement. If the bench technician finds something unexpected when the watch is opened, the owner is contacted before any further steps are taken.

Secure Holding Environment

Watches not actively on the bench are held in locked storage. Movement in and out of the workshop is logged. We are happy to describe our handling procedures on request.

Correct Lubricants Used

Lubricants are selected to the movement manufacturer's specifications. We do not apply a single oil type across all work — each surface and component type receives what is appropriate for it.

Watch Repair in Bangkok: What We Bring to the Bench

Mechanical watch ownership in Thailand has grown steadily over the past decade. Collectors range from those who inherited a single family piece and want to understand its condition, to daily wearers who put a chronograph through real use and need its mechanism to stay in tune. Pivotal Hour was built to serve both ends of that range with equal seriousness.

Water resistance is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of watch ownership. A rating stamped on the case-back reflects the watch's design capacity under controlled conditions — not what it can withstand after years of use with ageing gaskets. The rubber and synthetic seals that keep water out degrade over time. A watch worn swimming without a recent pressure test may not be as protected as its owner assumes. Our water resistance service addresses this directly: inspect the seals, replace what has degraded, test by instrument, and document the result.

Estate watches present different questions. When a watch arrives from an inheritance or a second-hand acquisition, the owner often has no record of what work has been done to it, what parts are original, or what its current condition means for its longevity. Our bench assessment provides the starting point: an honest, photographed, written account of what is present and what the technician recommends as a next step.

Chronograph movements reward careful service. The column wheel, the cam, the horizontal coupling, and the reset levers all interact with small tolerances and specific lubrication needs. When a chronograph's pusher becomes stiff or its reset is slow to snap, it is usually a sign that the mechanism is overdue for a specialist's attention. The timing trace taken after our service gives the owner a clear record of the movement's condition.
